Education & Background
Dr. Kade Thurman, Ph. D., MSW, LSW (they/them/theirs) is a Licensed Social Worker and Sociologist. Kade earned their Ph.D. & MA in Sociology as well as their MSW from Rutgers University, and a BA in Sociology from Michigan State University. As a Professor in Sociology, Kade has extensive experience teaching and studying inequality. Kade uses the sociological perspective to inform their therapeutic practice by working with people to understand the ways in which their social environment affects their individual well-being.
Kade has conducted research examining health and other disparities in incarcerated populations, same-sex married couples, and the long-term effects of physical and sexual victimization on socioeconomic outcomes. Kade has worked in higher education, public health, and non-profit organizations with LGBTQIA+ people and people living with HIV and Hepatitis C.
Approach
As a transmasculine therapist, Kade specialized in working with LGBTQIA+ people and parents, including transgender and gender diverse people. They work with clients presenting with a range of therapeutic issues including anxiety, depression, shame, guilt, existential questions, loss, and relational conflict. Their approach integrates psychodynamic, relational, and attachment-based perspectives. They seek to offer an affirming, accepting, safe place to identify strengths, enhance connections to self and others, and improve overall well-being.
